What I Walked Into

A few weeks ago, I got a call from a homeowner here in the Greater Corpus Christi area.

They had started hearing something moving around in the attic late at night. It was not happening every night, but it happened enough that they started paying attention.

The point is not just to remove rodents. The point is to remove the opportunities that let them get comfortable around the home.

The Outcome

Within the first week, the homeowner noticed a big difference.

The attic noises stopped, and no new droppings were showing up in the garage.

When I followed up later, they told me they were sleeping better because they were not lying there listening for sounds in the ceiling every night.

That is something I hear a lot with rodent jobs. The stress usually comes from not knowing what is happening behind the walls.

Once they understood where the problem started and what had been done to stop it, they felt much more at ease.

That is usually the goal: fix the issue, explain what caused it, and help the homeowner keep it from coming back.

Here are a few things I recommended the homeowner keep doing:

1. Store pet food in sealed containers instead of leaving it in bags.

2. Avoid leaving food, snacks, or open trash in the garage.

3. Walk around the outside of the home and look for small gaps near utility lines, vents, garage doors, and the foundation.

4. Keep garage and storage areas organized so rodents have fewer places to hide.

5. Trim vegetation away from the house.

6. Keep tree branches from touching the roofline when possible, since rodents can use them as travel routes.

These steps do not take much time, but they can make a home much less inviting to rodents.

Professional Insight

Rodent problems usually are not caused by one single thing.

Most of the time, it is a combination of access, shelter, food, and water.

That is why inspection matters so much. If you only deal with the droppings or the noise, you may miss the reason the rodents showed up in the first place.

A lot of the activity happens in places people rarely see, like attics, wall voids, garages, and crawl spaces.

The goal is not just to react after rodents show up. The goal is to understand why they are there and stop the conditions that allow the problem to continue.
